Bill Gates, 65, Co-founder of Microsoft and the fourth wealthiest person in the world together with his wife Melinda Gates, an entrepreneur are ending their marriage after a long span of 27 years.
The pair took to Twitter as they
announced their separation. "After a great deal of thought and a lot of
work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,"
the statement reads. However, they will continue to work together for the Bill
& Melinda Gates Foundation, the philanthropic organization centered on a
wide range of initiatives from global health to poverty alleviation that the
couple had founded together in 2000. "We continue to share a belief in
that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no
longer believe we can grow together as a couple in the next phase of our lives.
We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new
life," the statement further said.

Earlier on Monday, Melinda Gates filed
a petition for divorce in King County, Washington, asking a judge to dissolve
the marriage based on the couple's separation contract with no focus on the
financial details.
Over the past year, the pair, through
their foundation, have been involved in the fight against Covid-19 and the
effort to develop treatments and vaccines and ensure equal distribution around
the world. As of December, the group had committed a total of $1.75 billion to
the global pandemic response. Additionally, In March 2020, Bill Gates stepped
down from the boards of Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway to be able to dedicate
more time to his philanthropic priorities including work to tackle climate
change effectively.
Their 25-year-old daughter, Jennifer Gates, a medical student wrote on Instagram: "It's been a challenging stretch of time for our whole family. I'm still learning how to best support my own process and emotions as well as family members at this time, and am grateful for the space to do so. I won’t personally comment further on anything around the separation, but please know that your kind words and support mean the world to me”.
