India registered 2,16,642 new COVID-19 cases as of 11.15 p.m. IST on April 15. As many as 1,153 deaths were also recorded on the day. The number of new coronavirus cases in India hit a record daily high with over 2 lakh infections being reported in a day, while the active cases surpassed the 14- lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday. With the new cases, the total tally of COVID-19 cases in the country rose to 1,40,74,564 The data are sourced from covid19india.org, an independent aggregator of daily figures.

According to the ICMR, 26,20,03,415 samples have been tested up to April 14 with 13,84,549 samples being tested on Wednesday. Over 13.84 lakh tests were conducted on April 14. The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country stands at 11,44,93,238 till today.

Delhi recorded 17,282 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the highest single-day surge in the national capital since the onset of the pandemic, while over 100 fatalities were reported, according to data shared by the health department.

India became the second nation after the US to log over 1 lakh daily coronavirus cases on April 4 and in the next 10 days, the country became the second nation to record over 2 lakh daily COVID-19 cases.

India achieved this dubious distinction within 10 days, making it an unwilling follower of the US. As per the Union Health Ministry data, released on Thursday, April 15, morning, India logged 2,00,739 fresh coronavirus cases on April 14, which is two or three times faster (basis which data one considers for looking at the US' daily coronavirus trend) than the rate at which COVID-19 cases increased in America last year.

India's case track worse than the US benchmark

The US surpassed the 1 lakh mark in daily coronavirus cases on October 30 last year, as per the data collated by worldometers.info, and on November 4, according to figures maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is the US's health protection agency. The US, on November 4 last year, registered more than 1.10 lakh coronavirus cases.

The country doubled its daily COVID-19 tally on November 20, as per the world meters

data. The official CDC data exhibited 1,99,608 new coronavirus cases that day, and daily COVID-19 infections surpassed the 2-lakh mark on December 2 (2,06,882).

This implies that the US took 20 days at the fastest and 28 days at the slowest in leaping from 1 lakh daily coronavirus cases to 2 lakh cases, whereas India took just 10 days.

What are the solutions?

Solutions haven't changed, except for the addition of vaccines. Solutions remain masking, social distancing, prevention of

crowding, and hand washing. We need to push vaccination as fast as people. We must follow all guidelines and have to stay at home.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19:

Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.

Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.

Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Stay home if you feel unwell.

If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.
